Abstract
Drawing on a post-qualitative perspective that embraces concepts as method and proceeding through a rhizomatic approach, this contribution offers an initial theoretical elaboration of two emergent and still-becoming concepts for thinking about research and academic life: engagement and response-ability. These concepts are approached through a feminist sensibility and are understood as active forces and practices that create orientations for thinking differently beyond Cartesian epistemology, opening alternative possibilities for how we conduct research within critical organization and work studies. Rethinking engagement and response-ability across the multiple space-times of academic life, particularly in a historical moment profoundly marked by violence, releases their transformative potential while creating space for epistemic plurality. In doing so, these concepts raise a series of interconnected questions that span field encounters with vulnerable people; relationships with students and colleagues; engagements with productive sectors and communities; as well as our conversations with the writings of other scholars and the very practices through which scientific and public-oriented knowledge is written and circulated.
Bio
Anna Carreri is Associate Professor in Sociology of Work and Organization at the University of Verona, Italy. At the same University she is coordinator and co-founder of the Research Centre RE-WOrk: Researching for Remaking Work and Organizing, leading collaborative research projects with stakeholders and the community on work and organizational cultures, (alternative) forms of organizing social reproduction, and gender and diversity issues. She is also affiliated with the School of Social Sciences, at Hasselt University in Belgium, and associate member of CWOS-Centre for Work, Organization and Society, Essex Business School, UK. Her work is informed by a continuing concern with the ethics and practices of research. In this area, she recently co-edited, with Michela Cozza and Barbara Poggio, the volume Ethics of Engagement in Research Practices: Response-ability in Organisation and Management (Routledge, 2025).
